New technologies at the service of art and culture
1 – What are new technologies?
“New technologies” refer to rapidly evolving fields and diverse techniques that can make relationships between humans and machines more accessible.
In the field of culture, new technologies are most frequently used in the conservation of works of art.
Imaging: This allows art restorers to acquire data from a physical painting and understand what materials are present.
Artificial intelligence: in the field of art, its possibilities seem endless: creation, restoration, exhibition design, archaeological discoveries, authentication… A real Swiss army knife!
Digitization: A scanner photographs the work from every angle , and the thousands of shots are digitized and assembled by an algorithm. To provide a precise view of the condition of the works and guarantee their authenticity, digitization is a delight for art market players.
These technological developments allow for a better understanding of works of art. They are useful for their restoration, just as they serve their authentication and digital reproduction. They therefore play an important role, because preserving cultural heritage will inevitably require necessary renovations.
2 – New ways of consuming art
Following the health crisis, new ways of consuming art have multiplied. Indeed, all ” public places not essential to the life of the country ” saw their doors close in March 2020 in order to comply with safety measures to stop the pandemic. Among them, museums had to innovate and find solutions to be able to continue their activities and compensate for their closure.
Since the reopening of places of visit to the public, museums have innovated to become even more attractive.
Virtual and digital tours were thus created in partnership with Google Art Project. Remote tours have even become a directive of the Ministry of Culture in order to make heritage accessible to all audiences.
Digital audio guides are making their debut, a true revolution and an alternative to guided tours. The diversity of languages offered by such a system allows for a more diverse audience than with a lecturer.
Augmented reality has also made its appearance in museums. Many museums and historic monuments now offer a touchscreen tablet to accompany visitors. The tablet immerses the public in an immersive reconstruction. The main benefit of offering virtual reality headsets, tablets, and virtual collections within cultural venues is to reach a young audience who are sometimes reluctant to enter museums. With a new and attractive interface, the experience is similar to that of a video game.
The closure of cultural establishments during Covid allowed them to reinvent themselves and innovate to keep up with the times.
3 – Technology at the heart of museums
Museums are integrating new technological tools into the management of their establishments.
Visitor attractions increasingly want to enrich the visitor experience.
We find the QR code that allows visitors to present their ticket at the entrance to the site of the visit. The QR code can also offer a text or direct access to a website containing documents to download or a video. This reduces the number of billboards in front of the works while still offering additional information. A single QR code allows everyone to access the resources provided in different languages.
The collaboration between technology and art makes it possible to analyze and understand audience behavior.
Our Diptick ticketing system includes detailed reporting tools that allow you to analyze your museum’s statistics. You can leverage our tools to optimize your museum’s management.
Conclusion :
Despite the fact that more and more new technologies are emerging and we no longer know where to turn, this is a real plus for the world of art and culture.
There are plenty of new technologies that are useful in conservation to make works of art last over time.
But also, new solutions, such as the Diptick ticketing system, which will allow establishments to optimize their management and provide their visitors with a better customer experience.
